The family were the great landlords of Kerala, and were famous for promoting the indigenous Arts and Cultural forms of Kerala. Poomully Mana’s name and fame continues to this day, and it has contributed in its own way to preserving and nurturing the rich heritage which is unique to Kerala. KALARIPPAYATTU Kalaripayattu is the martial art of Kerala. It is the mother of martial arts and the oldest system of its kind still practiced in the world today, encompassing body, mind and the spirit. POOMULLY ARAMTHAMPURAN Poomully Aramthampuran started his education by studying Veda under his father till the age of sixteen. Thereafter he completed his education at Calicut Zamorine College. He then undertook a rigorous training in the ancient Indian sciences under the great Keralan masters for a period of 10 years. Devoting his life to teaching, he was a shining example of the benefits of Kalaripayattu. After the master's demise, a trust was formed by his disciples and followers with the objective of promoting and keeping alive the great tradition of the guru. Under the strict supervision and guidance of Poomully Narayanan Namboothirippad, the son of the master, the Kalarippayattu training centre started by Aramthampuran is still providing regular training to students from all over the world . KALARIPPAYATTU TRAINING COURSES/PROGRAMS Courses : Regular Training Program How to become an ‘abhyasi’(master) of Kalarippayattu? For becoming an ‘Abhyasi’(master) of Kalarippayattu one must undergo various stages of practice. As per the ancient system of Kalarippayattu one have to practice ‘eighteen adavus’(18 series of practices). It will take at least Six years of regular training under a master, for completing these eighteen series of practices. In Poomully Aramthampuran’s Kalarisangham the regular courses are designed in such a way that, anyone who is ready to take efforts and willing to sacrifice for this martial art can reach its highs by completing the prescribed stages of practices. Stages under the Six years regular training program Year Stage Method of Practice Term Aim Number of ‘Adavus’ involved. 1st Year ‘Mey Swadheenam’ Basic flexibility exercises 6 months to bring flexibility & physical control Nil 2nd Year ‘Mey Payattu’ Series of body exercises 6 months to enhance bodily movements and postures 4 Adavus 3rd Year ‘Mey Payattu’ Series of body exercises 6 months to enhance strength and stamina 4 Adavus 4th Year ‘Kol Payattu’ Practice using 2 types of wooden sticks 6 months to bring coordination 4 Adavus 5th Year ‘Ottakkol payattu’ Practice using specially designed wooden weapon 6 months application of weapons to vital points 3 Adavus 6th Year ‘Anga payattu’ Practice using Metal weapons 6 months for increasing mental strength and confidence 3 Adavus * Our Kalari is affiliated to Kerala Kalarippayattu Association(Govt. of Kerala). Certificates will be issued to the students upon the completion each stage. * Only after completing each stage one will be admitted to the subsequent stage. * The Regular training program will start from June and July 2010. * Admission for Regular training program except 1st year program will be open to Male students only. * 2 hours practical training classes starting from 6.am to 8.am will be held on each day, except on Sundays. * Theory classes upon Kalarippayattu and related sciences will be held on all Mondays and Wednesdays by the experts of each field, for a period of one hour. Notes will be provided for each class. Short term Course Short term Kalarippayattu training Programs Kalari practice stimulates all internal organs and improves the circulatory and respiratory functions. Digestive system will be made strong and has got psycho-physiological effect. The postures in Kalari are called Vadivu, and they are developed from the postures of animals, birds, and other living beings- like Aswa Vadivu (horse), Gaja Vadivu (elephant), Simha Vadivu (lion), Sarpa Vadivu (snake), Varaha Vadivu (boar), Kukkuta Vadivu ([censored]), Marjara Vadivu (cat) etc. Each posture has got the power of that particular being in its application. The strongest one is the Aswa Vadivu - the horse. Yoga has the similar kind of postures called Asana. If your time & purpose of visit is limited to the extent that; you want to maintain body fitness, get a general awareness about Kalarippayattu training, postures, techniques of practice using wooden weapons and Kalari treatments; you can opt a short term course best suitable for you.
